Lesson 1: Scrum
This article introduces you to the basics of Scrum and what it tries to solve.
We all have a job to do. Our job requires getting tasks done. An organization prospers when all tasks getting done are coordinated and aligned. The best teams work together, know what each other are doing and trust each other to take the best actions to get things done.
Generally we have the idea is if Users get a truly useful and problem solving application, they will pay for it as a necessary part of their lives and work. Our job is to deliver an application that does this for our users. We do that by listening to our users and applying the Agile method of software development to the solutions our users need.
Agile is a philosophy applicable to Software development. Agile focuses on people organizing with each other for each task instead of being told how to follow specific business methods to accomplish something. In Agile we are concerned mostly with, “Does it work?” Does the software feature work and does it accomplish the goals?
In Agile we look to the results through customer feedback and quick analysis of feedback to improve often and quickly until the software satisfies both the customer or end user and the objectives. More important in Agile we respond to new data and new feedback to tell us how to continue.
This is different than in the past we had a software project, it is all planned out, it is all mocked or designed, it is all programmed, it is all tested, and then released to the consumer. And we hope the consumer likes it!
When we are following Agile we understand that there are PHASES to each project. That each has has a time limit and this is called a SPRINT. This is important, SPRINTS are complete when the time is over, NOT necessarily when everyone agrees the work is done. Once the SPRINT is over, the work is over on that PHASE of work. To continue working on it would mean the task was reassigned in a new a different Sprint.
So we've learned a basic concept of the AGILE method and that SCRUM is a tool to implement Agile in a business or company.
We learned that a SPRINT is a word that means a time limit to get a part of the overall project complete and that is called a PHASE.
Do you know when this current Sprint is over?
